Coach Education Workshops

  • Good technique and movement are the bedrock of climbing. The FUNdamentals of Climbing workshops progressively explore climbing movement. The courses are a mixture of practical and classroom based. They are aimed primarily at climbing coaches , with F1 & 2 being pre-requisites for the Foundation and Development coach assessment and requirements to teach the NICAS scheme.

    • Courses are £100 for BMC members or £120 for non members

    • Book directly through the Mountain Training website.

    • Private courses are £325 per course with a £10 per participant booking surcharge.

    • Any private courses outside of Bristol will have added travel costs.

  • NICAS workshops are designed for and available exclusively to NICAS accredited centres. They typically include a mix of presentations, coach-led tasks, and on-wall climbing sessions or other physical activities.

    • 10am to 4pm

    • Up to 9 participants

    • Individual bookings are £90 per participant

    • For an exclusive booking at your wall the cost is £350

    • NICAS also offer bespoke workshops tailored to your needs for £500

Bouldering Wall Instructor Qualification & Assessments

  • Bouldering Wall Instructors deliver bouldering sessions on artificial bouldering walls. They are able to teach bouldering skills and manage groups safely.

    Ideal for: Bouldering wall staff, young people who’ve completed NICAS Bouldering Level 4 or 5, people who run bouldering sessions on artificial walls or towers.

    • You must be at least 16 years old

    • You should have at least 3 months of experience of using indoor/artificial bouldering walls, including a major public bouldering centre

    • You should have an interest in bouldering and in supervising groups bouldering

    • You must be a member (club or individual) of a mountaineering council (BMC, Mountaineering Ireland, Mountaineering Scotland).

    • You must create an account on Mountain Trainings system and register for the Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification (cost: £67)

    • You must be registered on the Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification

    • You must have recorded (ideally on DLOG*):

      • Visits to three different indoor/artificial bouldering walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public bouldering centre.

      • Personal bouldering at V2 or above

    • You must be at least 18 years old.

    • You must have attended a Bouldering Wall Instructor training course or have been granted exemption from training.

    • You must be familiar with the syllabus.

    • You must boulder proficiently at V2.

    • You must have assisted in the supervision of at least 10 instructed sessions on at least two different indoor/artificial bouldering venues, including a large public facility. A session is a minimum of an hour and instructors may hold a Mountain Training qualification or a site-specific sign off. At least five of these sessions must have personal reflective comments recorded on DLOG.

    • You must have a current first aid certificate, gained by completing an in-person (not online) course which involved at least one full day or eight hours of instruction and included an element of assessment.

Climbing Wall Instructor Qualification & Assessments

  • Climbing Wall Instructors deliver climbing sessions on artificial climbing walls. They can instruct and supervise climbing on bouldering walls, roped climbing walls and auto belay

    Ideal for: Climbing wall staff, young people who’ve completed NICAS Climbing Level 4 or 5, people who run bouldering sessions on artificial walls or towers.

    • You must be at least 17 years old

    • You should have at least 6 months of experience of using variety of climbing walls

    • You should have an interest in climbing and in supervising groups on climbing walls

    • You must be a member (club or individual) of a mountaineering council (BMC, Mountaineering Ireland, Mountaineering Scotland).

    • You must create an account on Mountain Trainings system and register for the Climbing Wall Instructor qualification (cost: £67)

    • You must be registered on the Climbing Wall Instructor qualification

    • You must have an understanding of the wider sport of climbing

    • You must have recorded (ideally on DLOG*):

      • Visits to three different climbing walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public wall

      • 10 led routes at French grade 4 (or equivalent)

    • You must be at least 18 years old.

    • You must have attended a Climbing Wall Instructor training course or have been granted exemption from training.

    • You must be familiar with the syllabus.

    • You must have logged a minimum of 30 personal climbing visits to at least three different climbing walls.

    • You must have led a minimum of 40 climbs on climbing walls.

    • You must be confident at leading routes at French grade 4 (or equivalent).

    • You must have assisted in the supervision of at least 15 instructed sessions on at least two different walls including a large public facility in a variety of contexts. At least five of these sessions must have personal reflective comments recorded on DLOG.

    • You must have a current first aid certificate, gained by completing an in-person (not online) course which involved at least one full day or eight hours of instruction and included an element of assessment.
